1. Wholesale boutique clothing trade shows

Attending a trade show is a great way to get inventory for an online boutique. 

A trade show is an exhibition where suppliers showcase their latest products—in apparel retail, their latest lines and designs—for industry professionals and consumers. Some shows are open to the public, but many require you to be a representative of a company to attend.

  • Pros: working with wholesalers can help you get products to market faster than manufacturing your own, and by visiting a trade show, you can test the quality of products in person.   • Cons: while there are different trade shows happening around the world throughout the year, each individual trade show is only open for a short amount of time.   • Pros: you can browse the catalogs at your leisure, in your own home or office. They’re full of vetted suppliers you know you can trust for your online boutique inventory.
  • Cons: you’ll often need to pay a fee to subscribe to these catalogs and directories. As you typically can’t order from them directly, you’ll still need to do the work to build up the relationship with the wholesalers you find in them.

Get references

Ask the supplier for references, then contact the references and ask them how they like working with the supplier. 

If the supplier isn’t willing to hand over references, that’s a potential red flag. It may mean they don’t have many, or any, satisfied retailers. 

Once you have reference contact information, speak to them without the supplier involved. Ask them how long they’ve been working with the supplier, what the supplier’s time frames are like and if there’s anything they find difficult about the supplier. 

Compile your contacts

As you get to know your potential wholesale supplier, you should have contact information for someone specific working for them, not just a general email. Find out if you’ll be working with a dedicated sales representative and what sorts of contacts you’ll have once you sign a contract. 

If you don’t have a dedicated sales representative, your requests may slip under the radar. If you do, pay attention to the sales rep’s communication style and responsiveness. If they take days to respond to an email and don’t have the answers you need, then you’ll probably have a frustrating working relationship. It’s a sign the supplier may be more trouble than they’re worth; what if you need to get in contact with them about something time sensitive?

If they respond promptly and are organized, then you could be looking at the beginning of a mutually beneficial partnership.

Look at samples—real samples

Photos and references are nice, but they don’t give you the hands-on experience with a product you need to make a proper assessment. Before doing some bulk inventory ordering for an online boutique, you need samples.

How to set prices for your online boutique

There are a few different ways to set prices for an online boutique.

The first strategy, keystone markup, involves simply doubling the wholesale price. This strategy is used across the industry. However, it may not give you enough of a profit margin as it doesn’t take your costs (such as labor, shipping, marketing, software and discounts) into consideration. 

The second method is to use the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP), the name that the manufacturer recommends you sell the item for. Some manufacturers mandate an MSRP, which doesn’t take your costs into account. Other manufacturers simply offer the MSRP as a suggestion, to help put their retailers on a level playing field.

The third strategy is to use the absorption pricing method, which involves adding up the costs incurred to run your business (including labor, marketing, software and the cost of your inventory), dividing it by the number of units purchased and adding your desired profit margin.
