How to Protect Your Business From Impersonation Scams

How to Protect Your Business From Impersonation Scams

A single convincing message can be all it takes to put your business at risk. Staying informed is your first line of defense.

Impersonation scams and phishing attempts are common tactics used to scam merchants across the industry. Fraudsters may attempt to pose as Lightspeed representatives and trick you into sharing sensitive information or moving funds.

As fraud tactics continue to evolve, we want to ensure you know exactly what to look for and what to do if something doesn’t feel right.

What Lightspeed will never do

Understanding what to expect from us is key to staying safe. Here are some things Lightspeed will never ask of you:

• Ask you to move funds or change your settlement account to an unfamiliar account

• Ask for your password or multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes

• Ask you to act quickly, using urgency to limit your time to think or verify

• Ask you to keep a security matter confidential from family members or law enforcement

If you ever receive a request like this, it is not from Lightspeed.

Warning signs of impersonation or fraud

Fraudulent communications often attempt to create urgency or mimic trusted companies/brands.

Be cautious if you notice:

 • Emails, texts or phone calls from unfamiliar or unrecognized addresses

 • Slight misspellings or unusual characters in sender addresses

 • Urgent, threatening or high-pressure language

 • Unverified request to change banking details

 • Request to move funds or process refunds you were not expecting

 • Suspicious link to unfamiliar login pages

 • Unexpected attachments or unusual document requests

It’s important to understand and follow the following security best practices to help protect your business online.
