On the evolution of the business

Double Puc isn’t Griff’s first business with his co-founder, Ed Brown. They’ve been able to apply the values of their first business, Friska, to their current venture.

“We scaled back quite significantly from our 13 sites with Friska,” explains Griff. “Rather than competing on the High Street, we are more focused on event catering and venue-to-venue hospitality.”

Two other elements Friska gave to Double Puc are its name (the best-selling sweet treats were their famous cookies) and Lightspeed, which Griff has chosen for both businesses, making him a customer for more than 13 years now. “It’s a really solid system that works and does what it says it does,” he says of his business’ ongoing reliance on Lightspeed.

Connecting the kitchen to the counter

As the business evolved, the way the team uses tech has also evolved. At Double Puc, Lightspeed KDS (Kitchen Display System) has made a big impact on their day-to-day operations, and having it within their ePOS is key.

“Having KDS within the platform as opposed to having a separate KDS makes everything work better,” Griff says. “Taking an order and sending that order to the relevant station in the kitchen or in the café ensures the customer gets what they've ordered everytime.”

When it comes to serving guests efficiently, Griff and his team use the KDS configurations that allow them to build extras into their menus like meal deals, as well as click-and-collect and QR code menus at tables.

“Having KDS within the platform as opposed to having a separate KDS provides makes everything work better.”

Running the numbers

Even with years of experience in the industry, Griff keeps a close eye on performance using Lightspeed Pulse, our performance tracking tool. “I check it on a daily basis (sometimes too regularly) just to see where we're at in terms of how we're trading today versus last week, yesterday versus last week, and so on,” says Griff.

He says it’s full of good insights that are reliable and robust, and that’s what creates the solid foundation of Lightspeed’s offering. It’s one of the things that makes Lightspeed a great partner for Double Puc. “That's why we've been with you for 13 years,” Griff adds.

A tech stack driven by Lightspeed

Lightspeed isn’t the only tech Griff and his team have been using for those 13 years. They use Lightspeed’s integration with 5loyalty to reward their regulars with points, and our RocketOS integration to get a complete picture of their inventory.

“Connecting sales information from Lightspeed to RocketOS helps us get a variety of analyses when we do stock take,” says Griff. “Are we using too much coffee, milk, sugar, and where are we losing stock?”

Griff sees that as an ideal world, where business owners take a step back and make decisions led by data. That’s what he and his team are doing at Double Puc: making strategic choices and taking steps to grow sustainably.
