“Lightspeed Retail helps us run the company much more efficiently, allowing us to focus our attention on growth.”
Almost everyone has a favorite t-shirt. It’s soft, fits just right and can be worn as a pyjama top or dressed up with a nice pair of jeans and shoes. The perfect “worn-in” tee is the inspiration behind the Marine Layer brand, which is all about high quality, comfortable basics.
“We were looking for something progressive and user-friendly. We knew we would be growing, and we felt Lightspeed was a POS that would grow with us,” says Mason James, Marine Layer’s senior operations associate.
And grow they did. There are over 45 in-store employees, 22 employees at the headquarters now, and most of them use Lightspeed Retail daily. “The staff at Marine Layer has found Lightspeed Retail incredibly helpful” explains Mason.
“Obviously, all of our sales associates are using Lightspeed for our in-store transactions, but they also use it for store transfers and inventory, which is very important when you have multiple locations. Our production team uses Lightspeed to create product SKUs and manage our inventory. The customer service team relies on the system to fulfill web orders and manage their inventory. I use it for everything – sales, reporting, predictions and managing inventory.”
Managing 11 stores is no easy feat. However, because Lightspeed Retail is cloud-based, Marine Layer store managers can access data and check on store performance from any location, including the comfort of their homes. “We can be at our desks here in San Francisco and use Lightspeed to check up on our other stores anywhere else in the U.S,” says Mason.
“Being able to look up a customer invoice from our Chicago store to do a size exchange in San Francisco creates a much better customer experience.”
When it comes to building a strong brand, a seamless customer experience is paramount – it’s why speedy transactions are crucial. Time wasted looking up products can potentially send customers walking, but Lightspeed Retail helps the sales associates track down the right items in a flash. “It’s so easy to check another store's inventory – we can hunt down products for customers at other stores or online within seconds,” says Mason.
In addition to providing great customer service, the time saved when it comes to back office operations is one of the greatest benefits of Lightspeed Retail. “We save hours when it comes to operations such as creating SKUs. The fact that information is shared across stores makes a huge difference. I can’t tell you how happy our production associate has been.”
Ultimately, Marine Layer’s growth can be attributed to their commitment to driving repeat business by delighting customers. Understanding customers’ habits and staying in touch with them is crucial for encouraging loyalty.
“Lightspeed is an extremely useful tool for keeping tabs on our customers’ purchase history and shopping patterns. With our first system, a regular customer at one location could have visited another store and be treated as a new customer in the system. It’s so much nicer to be able to see if someone has shopped at any of our stores before and I think the customers appreciate the experience more too.”
