Pierre-Benoit Duhamel, owner and founder of Clusier, takes great pride in the premium service his business provides, and in finding the best possible fashions for his clients.

Duhamel applies this disciplined approach to managing every aspect of Clusier as a business. In evaluating Clusier’s store operations, he felt that the level of detail applied to every aspect of the business was well-managed, but with one exception: the boutique’s business reporting practices. Prior to working with Lightspeed, Duhamel and his team simply used Excel for invoicing and to generate other reports.

“I am a marketer at heart. I travel the world for the right fabric and only have clothes made by certain manufacturers. In our store, my team and I pride ourselves on being able to address our repeat customers by first name. As our business grew, however, I felt we were losing the personal touch that is the main advantage that differentiates a boutique store from a major department store. I knew we could offer more,“ commented Duhamel.

A considerable amount of time went into researching Lightspeed's features and service offering before Duhamel decided to make the purchase. He wanted to make sure that he could maximize the software's capabilities. In addition to its retail management capabilities, Duhamel saw Lightspeed as a marketing tool to keep in touch with customers after they exited the boutique.

To enhance the customer experience, each Clusier customer receives a customer card. The sales team records the customer's name, measurements, and personal interests. This manually entered data is then synced with Lightspeed sales reports so that when a customer returns to the store, the sales staff knows what he has previously purchased and his shopping habits. Clusier also uses this information to tailor email offerings. For instance, a customer might receive an email message about the availability of a new season's collection of a specific brand of shirts (based on research of previous sales reports), a promo on the combined purchase of a shirt and jacket – in the customer's size (based on a database export of customers' measurements), or an invitation to a wine tasting event at the store (based on small talk with sales staff that is later entered in the customer's profile).

While customer service is key, Clusier also relies heavily on Lightspeed's reporting capabilities to make better buying decisions and to manage cash flow.

“I used to stock linen shirts in my stores for purchase on February 1st. Looking back at sales reports, I see these shirts were not really selling until April, when the sun is out. From now on, I make purchases with our net 60 payment schedule in mind. This way, I have the sales floor stocked appropriately, and I might even be able to sell two-thirds of the inventory before I have to pay the initial purchase order,“ explained Duhamel.

“My best advice for new users of Lightspeed is to take the time to learn how to sell differently, if not better. Make the most of the features for your business. Don't get stuck with using Lightspeed only as a POS and inventory management tool. The potential is far wider. To me, the reporting tool is worth more than the inventory management tool. Knowing who my customer is helps me sell 30% more merchandise because it's a targeted approach. This is not to say that the inventory management tool is not useful. I have relied on it to reduce items in stock, because less inventory means more cash in the business. We're using the extra money to create our custom Magento web store to bring the Clusier brand to the rest of the world,“ said Duhamel.
