International Women's Day 2014
March 8th is International Women’s Day; a reminder that women hold up half the sky in life and increasingly in the business world—something that is sometimes forgotten or ignored by some. According to a recent report commissioned by American Express, it is estimated that there are over 8.6 million female-owned businesses in the United States alone, generating over $1.3 trillion in revenues and employing nearly 7.8 million people. That’s a whole lot of wo-manpower.
The retail industry is home to some to heavy hitters such as Carol M. Meyrowitz, president and CEO of the TJX Companies; Rosalind Brewer, president and CEO of Sam’s Club; and Mindy Grossman, CEO of HSNi. While these astute businesswomen have made a huge impact on women’s roles in our industry, there’s still room for more women to move into top executive positions to match the number of their male counterparts. The more light that is shed on the amazing feats of women, the more others can gain inspiration from positive role models. This is why our goal today isn’t to point out existing inequalities or ongoing issues; it’s to acknowledge the accomplishments of the female entrepreneurs we work with, as we are privileged to collaborate with inspiring women that make great contributions to retail.
We often mention STORY, as the independently owned boutique has refreshingly unique concept. The store was imagined by Rachel Shechtman, who has been featured on Fortune’s “40 under 40” alongside the founders of giants like Facebook, Airbnb, and BuzzFeed. With consultancy roles for brands like TOMS shoes and Kraft, she’s evolved to become a veritable retail guru with a lot of media clout. Rachel’s success has gotten widespread attention, and she’s just one of many amazing female entrepreneurs we work with on a daily basis.
To all the women who’ve sacrificed time and energy to build the business of their dreams, this shout out is for you! Happy International Women’s Day!
